I'm a pronunciation specialist in the field of English language teaching, materials writer, and teacher trainer. I'm also joint-coordinator of IATEFL Pronunciation special interest group (PronSIG) and former editor of the SIG’s biannual journal Speak Out! (2017-2023). I'm co-author of Teaching English Pronunciation for a Global World (OUP, 2024).
I hold a CELTA, a Dip TESOL, and a Master's of Research in English language and linguistics and have been teaching English to international students since 2005. Since then I've taught in the UK, Ireland, Italy and the Middle East, and am currently based at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, Scotland where I am a programme coordinator and teach English for Academic Purposes (EAP) and pronunciation electives.
I love to travel, collaborate, and share my research at conferences and training events around the world, and have done so in Russia, Poland, Spain, Ireland, the USA, throughout the UK, and at many international online events.
My research interests lie in the field of pronunciation pedagogy and accent, and the issues which can arise when students and teachers of English are confronted with diverse regional L1 Englishes and global Englishes. This led to my creation of The Scottish Sound School a resource to help new arrivals to Scotland acclimate to the unfamiliar sounds of Scottish speech.
